Ayurvedic Practices for Natural, Radiant Ageing

This information  is for educational purposes only and is based on Ayurvedic principles and my personal experience. It is not a substitute for medical advice, diagnosis or treatment.

These are the simple practices I return to regularly so I can feel confident ageing naturally, make-up free.

I let go of the belief that I need a shelf full of products and make-up to express my beauty as I age. I’ve become much more curious about how I can nourish my skin into radiant health ~ through the way I sleep, eat, move, think, dress and care for my skin.

Here are some of the practices that have become part of my own approach to natural beauty:

1. I go to bed early.

10pm feels late for me :) I love rising with the sun and allowing my daily rhythm to follow nature’s cycles. For me, living in greater alignment with nature is an important part of feeling and looking well.

2. I consciously relax my face.

I take a few moments each day to soften my jaw, forehead, eyes and mouth ~ while massaging my face, applying skincare, meditating… sometimes even when I’m waiting in line at the post office. When we habitually hold tension in the face, it can affect how relaxed, fresh and radiant our skin appears.

3. I consciously relax my mind.

In Ayurveda we understand that the face often reflects what is happening within us. When my mind is busy or stressed, I notice it in my facial tension ~ so creating moments of mental stillness and relaxation is part of my skincare practice, too.

4. I keep my skincare simple.

I don’t rely on a bathroom cabinet full of fancy products. My routine is centered around simple ingredients that nourish my skin’s radiance: cold-pressed oils, rose water, balms and kitchen ingredients ~ suited to my climate and unique skin type.

5. Abhyanga

As we age the skin naturally becomes dryer. Oil plays a vital role in Ayurveda for hydrating the skin externally and supporting a youthful glow. I practice abhyanga several times a week and at the least, apply oil to my skin before showering (water is drying). When it comes to natural, radiant ageing, regularly oiling my body is non-negotiable for me. Note: there are contraindications associated with abhyanga so always do your research to ensure a practice is suitable for your unique circumstances.

6. I pay attention to my digestion.

I listen to my body and respond when my digestion feels uncomfortable or out of balance. From an Ayurvedic perspective, healthy digestion is foundational to overall wellbeing ~ which is reflected in the skin.

7. I eat a light, early dinner.

Ayurvedic wisdom suggests that digestion mirrors the sun. When the sun sets, digestion also weakens which is why light, early dinners are preferred. I allow at least 3 hours after eating before I go to bed and keep my dinners light, but also nourishing. This is one of the simplest ways I support my overall wellbeing and skin health.

8. I take regular breaks from caffeine.

I’ve been gradually letting go of my reliance on caffeine and paying attention to how I feel without it. For me, this is less about following a rule and more about noticing what genuinely supports calm, hydrated and balanced wellbeing.

9. I eat my hydration.

I love naturally hydrating, nourishing foods: dahls, soups, stews, kitcharis, porridge and meals prepared with plenty of water. I tend to choose these more often than dry convenience foods such as crackers and toast which may not offer the same hydrating benefits..

10. I prioritise fresh, vibrant food.

In Ayurveda there is a principle: Like attracts like and the opposite brings balance. Thus, I avoid eating leftovers and consume mostly fresh, vibrant foods filled with prana (life-force) as a way to feed radiant skin from within.

11. I favour warm or room-temperature drinks.

I rarely drink iced water or very cold drinks which are said to dampen digestion, from an Ayurvedic perspective. Instead, I sip warm water and  herbal teas to hydrate my skin and nourish a sense of juiciness from within.

12. I leave space between meals.

I generally eat three nourishing meals a day and avoid grazing unless I’m genuinely hungry. From an Ayurvedic perspective, allowing adequate space between meals allows for proper digestion and assimilation ~ as digestion also needs time to rest. Note: This currently works for me in the current season I’m in, but there is no one-size fits all. There are life stages and circumstances when snacking may be needed and supportive ~ such as in the case of growing children.

13. I dress to support sattva

Sattva refers to the qualities of peace, balance, equilibrium ~ which can help us to feel more content and calm, and thus support vitality and radiance as we age. There are many ways to cultivate sattva in our daily life ~ our wardrobe being one of them. The clothes we wear can either harmonise with our unique beauty or make us appear dull and washed out. I’ve found cultivating a Sattvic Wardrobe to be one of the most effective beauty hacks for enhancing magnetism and inner peace. Read more about my journey → HERE.

These are some of the simple practices that help me feel beautiful and embodied in my skin as I grow older ~ by supporting my wellbeing and allowing my radiance to evolve with me.
